Lights over Olafsfjord

After the whale trip, we grabbed lunch of lamb kebabs and fish soup at a local Indian restaurant that faced the wharf, and then headed further north.  Our stop tonight was in Olafsfjordur, called Brimnes Bunglalos. Each small cabin is also equipped with a hot tub on the porch. When we pulled into town, I spotted a grocery store but no restaurants, and I knew that tonight we’d need to make our own dinner. We stopped into the grocery store and grabbed some hot dogs, buns, sauce, granola, coffee creamer and some fresh blueberries and potato chips.

Our cabin was well equipped, even for just three tiny rooms.  We put the food away and started filling the hot tub, which you did by turning a valve in the bathroom, and one under the porch. The tub is fiberglass, octagonal tub, but kept empty, for easy cleaning, cold storage and lack of chemicals. In no time at all, the tub was steaming and full and we jumped in! Ray’s not a fan of hot water, so in about 10 minutes he bailed, but the cabin was right next to a river, and I sat and enjoyed the steaming water, listening to the ducks playing in the river, and watched the sun start to go down.

When I came back inside, Ray had decided to take a nap, so I laid down on the futon and closed my eyes, too. TWO hours later, we both woke up!  I broke out the hot plate and we fixed our simple dinner and waited on the lights.  About 8:45, I stepped out and was dismayed at the amount of light pollution immediately around us, but Ray said hop in the car, we’ll go down a bit and find some dark.
We didn’t have to go very far at all, and we found the perfect little parking lot/boat ramp on the town’s lake and settled in for a fabulous show.
